I Look Back Laughing Now
Times were hard when we first met
And I was on skid row
Scene was heavy and hard to forget
And peace of mind no go.
We held on to straws all around
And together we fell apart
Scrabbling around so close to the ground
Trying to crawl back to the start . . . but how
I look back laughing now.
Blonde haired Angie-babe
She was a dealer
Struck her bargains on a heart of stone
An old mama Crackerbar she got me in a fix
Then let me out on my own
Big Cal Houston (remember his face?)
Got religion and he spread it around
Died of fastin' (so slow) and had to be laid in the ground
By you, he's in heaven now.
Late last summer I had to perform
Though I stayed where I was and cried
But when I found we couldn't I died
So after my death I moved out west
Looking for an island home
Crowd went in but I found I couldn't swim
So I stayed in west mainland on my own, and how . . .
I'm still laughing now.
Then I met a woman with a ring on her nose
To prove she was a gypsy queen
She told my fortune
Man! She was close
So I got back to where I'd been
But I couldn't forget the things that she said
I had to choose a way somehow
I got scared so I run away, and how . . .
I'm still laughing now.
Yes, how . . . I look back laughing now.
